I recently spent time visiting several key customers at their operations during peak harvest season: not in a conference room, not on a video call, but on the receiving pad, at the grading table, and on the packaging line, at the absolute height of their operations. 

There is a reason we visit specialty crop processors during peak season and not in the off months. Peak season is when a processing operation tells you the truth. Every constraint is visible. Every workaround someone invented seasons ago is in plain sight. The organic systems operators have built over years (taped-together fixes sitting right next to million-dollar equipment) tell you more about where the real gaps are than any requirements document ever will. 

What we saw 

Across a series of site visits, we walked a range of fresh and processed specialty crops through the full arc of their journey: harvesting, receiving, grading, processing, and packaging. Different commodities, different equipment, different growing regions, and yet a strikingly consistent pattern in where information is created, where it gets captured, and where it quietly disappears. 

Being able to see all five stages in sequence, at speed, with product moving, was both refreshing and genuinely enlightening. It is one thing to know that a grading station feeds a processing line. It is another to stand between them and watch what data survives the trip. 

The visits reinforced a widely shared challenge across specialty crop processing: real, often underappreciated opportunities to measure and improve yield and quality: not marginal opportunities, but significant ones. 

The question nobody could fully answer 

The most valuable thing that came out of this work was not a feature request. It was a question that echoes across the industry, in different words, at site after site: 

Is this load going to give us 40 cases per ton, or 60? 

Think about what that gap represents. Same acreage, same harvest window, same plant, same crew. A 50 percent swing in finished goods out the back door, driven by raw material characteristics that were measurable at receiving and grading hours earlier, but that were never connected to what came off the packaging line at the end of the run. 

Today that connection is largely made after the fact, by experienced people reasoning backward from a monthly number. Processors have extraordinary institutional knowledge, and they use it well. But institutional knowledge does not scale to every load, every shift, and every grower contract, and it does not survive a retirement. 

Closing that loop, linking what was received and graded to what was actually produced and packed, is the single highest-leverage measurement problem in specialty crop processing. Solve it, and yield stops being a lagging indicator and becomes something you can act on while the crop is still moving. 

From the field to finished goods 

ExtendAg has earned its position as the source of truth for field operations and grading. That is real, and our customers rely on it every day. What became unmistakable during this work is that the same discipline needs to extend through processing and packaging. 

That is where we are headed. One continuous record from harvest through finished goods: 

  • Receiving and grading: what came in, from which grower and field, at what quality 

  • Processing: what that raw material actually did on the line 

  • Packaging and finished goods: cases per ton, by lot, by grower, by variety, by day 

  • Back to the field: grower payment, agronomic decisions, and next season’s contracts informed by outcomes rather than estimates 

The result is a total picture: not a field system and a plant system that meet in a spreadsheet once a month, but a single operational record that answers yield and quality questions in the moment they still matter. 

What comes next 

We look forward to continuing these conversations across our customer base, building toward exactly this kind of connected record. Processors are already sitting on the raw material for it: the scale tickets, the grade sheets, the line data, the case counts. The opportunity is in connecting it, standardizing it, and putting it in front of the people making decisions during the run instead of after it. 

There is an old adage that has held up for a long time in this industry and every other one: what gets measured gets improved. 

Our job is to make the measuring effortless, accurate, and continuous, from harvesting to finished goods. This work made it clear how much value is waiting on the other side of that.
